Time Travel
One of my guilty pleasures is a geeky show about time travel. In the show, as in many time travel fantasies, they talk about fixed points in time. These are events, some good and some bad, that cannot be changed because they are vital to the fabric of time. This concept of “fixed points” got me to thinking about the events in my life that I wish I could have changed or handled differently.
Surely we all have had moments, events, decisions or unexpected surprises that leave us wishing we had a time machine to go back. Learning one of life’s lessons (as cliche as it sounds) is of course one of the best ways to move on after things don’t go our way. As nice as that sounds, I speak with people all the time that are living in regret, stuck in the past. Should’ve, could’ve,if only’s and what-if’s bury people and leave them struggling with things they can’t change or let go of. Wrong career paths, missed opportunities on love, too many or too few children are just a few common things that people struggle with.
If you are stuck with regret from your past and “taking it as a life lesson” isn’t working for you; perhaps it’s time to accept the event or decision as a “fixed point in time”. Something that cannot be changed no matter how badly you regret it or how much you wish it was different. You deserve to allow yourself to move forward and be free from the past. If you need help letting go or the past, set up an appointment with a therapist and start moving out of the past and into the future that you desire. In a way, I suppose that sounds like its own form of time travel!
